Thank you in advance for signing up as soon as possible! We're kicking off February with some new words! This Thursday, February 1st, the students have their Wordly Wise Lesson 6 quiz. The students have received a link to Lesson 6 in their school emails, but they can also access it here: Wordly Wise Lesson 6 Quizlet.

Summary: We have 3 Spring semester field trips scheduled for 5th grade:
One payment of $35 can be made to cover all 3 trips on Skyward Family Access by Friday, February 9th. Important Details: HCMS VISIT Our fifth graders will take a short field trip to Hill Country Middle School on Wednesday, January 31st from 9:00 to 10:45ish a.m. We will join fifth graders from Cedar Creek and Eanes Elementary to get a peek at some of the fun things that will happen next year at HCMS. Note: You do not need to do ANYTHING for this field trip. This information is intended to help you with scheduling purposes only. In addition, on February 14th, the HCMS counselors will visit us in our homerooms at BPE to help the students begin scheduling their HCMS Fine Arts selection (choir, band, and orchestra). You and your child will also choose which level of language arts class s/he will take next year (6th grade or Pre-AP 6th). The attached checklist is a useful tool when determining the best fit for your child. Actual leveled math course selections happen later on in the school year. Your teachers will be in touch with you late in the school year to determine placement in math. Note: I am aware that there are children planning to attend schools other than HCMS next year. We still plan for these kids to attend the field trip and schedule electives that will be effective until they are officially withdrawn from EISD at the end of the school year. LBJ LIBRARY & POLLYANNA THEATER Our next field trip is scheduled for Thursday, February 15th at the LBJ Presidential Library. The students will enjoy Liberty, Equality and Fireworks, a play performed by the Pollyanna Theater Group. Set in a history museum, the play’s characters (a group of elementary students) experience key elements of the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s when iconic images from this important time period come to life and begin to move and speak. We will also get to tour the museum at the library. The cost for this field trip is to be paid online using Skyward Family Access. On the day of the trip, students should arrive to school at the normal time with a completely disposable sack lunch. No backpacks are needed this day. We will load the school buses at approximately 9:45 and return before the regular school day dismissal time. We would love to invite 8 parents to chaperone and to assist with transporting the student lunches to the LBJ Library. Please email your homeroom teacher if you are interested in helping out. We’ll take the first 8 volunteers for each homeroom. Cost per chaperone is $4; please send in cash once you receive confirmation from your homeroom teacher. Chaperones will not pay for their entry through Skyward Family Access but instead send $4 cash into homeroom teacher. VOLENTE BEACH: While it is too early to start mentioning summer to the kids, plans for the end of the year are underway. The entire 5th grade will take a field trip to VOLENTE BEACH during the last week of school for a day of fun, food, and games for our end of year celebration. Please keep an eye out for more details. This fee should also be paid for online through Skyward Family Access. PAYMENT: Please proceed to Skyward Family Access when you are able to pay your $35 fee for all 3 of these field trips. Do not hesitate to connect with your homeroom teacher or the counselors for any scholarship needs. Please plan to pay your fee by Friday, February 9th. Next Thursday, January 18th, the students will have their first Wordly Wise quiz of the new year, Lesson 5. We studied these words in class on January 10th; however, the students will also benefit from reviewing these words on Quizlet and completing their practice packet. They have received a link to Lesson 5 in their school emails, but they can also access it here: Wordly Wise Lesson 5 Quizlet.
If you have trouble viewing the site, you can copy and paste this link: https://quizlet.com/1199838/wordly-wise-3000-lesson-5-book-5-flash-cards/ If your child is looking for a new book to read, please take a look at the attached list of books suggested by other 5th graders at BPE! During the last week of class, the 5th graders put together a list of book recommendations for their peers. Each student was given the opportunity to add a book to the attached list, or to endorse a book already listed by placing a heart next to it.
As a reminder, all students need to bring lunch tomorrow. We will be eating in the classroom at 12pm. Recess will run from 12:20-12:40, and our holiday party begins at 12:45. If you would like to join us for some holiday fun, please stop by any time between 12:45-1:35.
In the afternoon, we will attend The African Children’s Choir at 1:45 in the cafeteria. All parents are welcome to join us at the performance as well. If you would like your child to be dismissed early at the end of the performance at 2:30pm, please make sure your child checks out with me first! Thank you in advance for helping me ensure everyone gets home safely :) In summary:
Please contact me with any questions or concerns about lunch. I hope to see you tomorrow! Due to the snow day on Friday, our Nutcracker field trip at Westlake High School has been moved to tomorrow, Monday, December 11th. We are so thrilled that we'll still be able to attend the performance! Students should go to assembly and specials in the morning prior to the performance, and fitness/recess/lunch will run at the normal time.
**Our fiction test on comparing and contrasting themes has also been moved to Tuesday, December 12th.** The Fiction Test will be taking place across 3 school days: Wednesday, December 6th
This Thursday, December 7th, the students have their fiction test. It will cover the following topics:
Please see the attached study guide for more detailed information.
Next Tuesday, December 5th, the students have their Lesson 4 Wordly Wise quiz. We studied these words briefly in class by demonstrating their meanings in skits; however, the students will also benefit from reviewing these words on Quizlet. They have received a link to Lesson 4 in their school emails, but they can also access it here: Wordly Wise Lesson 4 Quizlet. If you have trouble viewing the site, you can copy and paste this link:

Packing Instructions:
Schedule: Wednesday -11/15
Thursday -11/16
Friday -11/17
Important for parents: If your child is not leaving school with you on Friday, November 17th, please send me the name of the person with whom your child will be traveling by Thursday, November 16th. Things are moving quickly! We're on to Wordly Wise Lesson 3. The quiz is scheduled for next Friday, November 10th. Students have received a link to Quizlet in their emails, but they can also access it here: Wordly Wise Lesson 3 Quizlet. If you have trouble viewing the site, you can also copy and paste this link:
https://quizlet.com/1149795/wordly-wise-3000-book-lesson-3-flash-cards/ This Wednesday and Thursday, students have been assigned chapters 13, 14, and 15 of Walk Two Moons. This is in place of their 20 minutes of JRB reading (although reading is always encouraged!). In addition to reading these chapters, students need to write or draw a summary of each chapter. They have practiced this in class, and should be familiar with the process. If students have misplaced their worksheet, they can find it below.
To study for next Thursday's Wordly Wise quiz on Lesson 2, please visit the Wordly Wise Lesson 2 Quizlet website. If you have trouble viewing the site, you can also copy and paste this link: https://quizlet.com/1101731/wordly-wise-3000-book5-lesson-2-flash-cards/
At this time, students have received final grades for their "Best Thing I Ever Ate" writing assignment. Can I just say - WOW! What creative, descriptive, and expressive writers we have in 5th grade! I've never enjoyed (or been so hungry!) grading as much as I did this past weekend. Students received comments on their work as well as a completed rubric. For your reference, the rubric is attached below. Please note that the students' 3-D models are due in class by this Friday, October 20th. We will not be working on these in class, but students have been given the option of joining me during recess tomorrow or Thursday to work on their projects.
In order for students to have the opportunity to submit their very best work, I have extended the due date of our "Best Thing I Ever Ate" 3-D models to next week (exact due date TBD pending our progress today and tomorrow). Only published writing pieces will be due this Friday, October 13th.
Please note that your child can work on his/her draft at home using Google Docs. S/he can log-in using his/her school email and password. The link to Google Docs is below: https://www.google.com/docs/about/ If your child has trouble logging in, please encourage him/her to comes see me during fitness/recess/lunch, so that I can walk him/her through it ~ sometimes it's easier to see it than read through directions :) Students should be logging their reading in Biblionasium EVERY night. I will be pulling reports on "minutes logged" for every student 4 times this semester. The TOP 2 grades will be factored in to students' daily check grades (for example, a student who receives a 100%, 45%, 95%, and 20% will receive a 100% and a 95% as their two Biblionasium homework grades).
These grades are calculated based on percent of reading homework completed (to be complete, it must be logged!). For example, on most weeks, the students are assigned 20 minutes of reading for 4 nights (80 minutes total). That means that students should be reading and logging at least 60-80 minutes each week (I often give one grace day). So, if a student logs 40 minutes, s/he will receive a 66%. If a student logs 60 minutes or above, s/he will receive a 100%. That is 2 free 100% for logging reading! Again, I will be pulling the TOP 2 grades, so if a student has had trouble remembering to log his/her reading so far this semester and has earned a 0%, s/he still has a chance to make it up. Please note: All students have been encouraged to come see me about their accounts if they are not working. There is no need to send me an email, just remind your child to come see me at fitness or lunch - I will make myself available! Live Oak is just around the corner! As a reminder:
To study for this Friday's Wordly Wise quiz, please visit the Wordly Wise Lesson 1 Quizlet website. If you have trouble viewing the site, you can also copy and paste this link: https://quizlet.com/1071615/wordly-wise-3000-book-5-lesson-1-flash-cards/
On Monday, we reviewed our first reading quiz together. The rubric below guided our discussion, and students were given time to review my comments. These quizzes should have come home in students' reading folders. If your child received a 6/8 (below 80%) or below, s/he will have the opportunity to retake this quiz on Friday, October 6th. We will be reviewing the concepts covered on this quiz in class; however, I also encourage you to use the resources below to review vocabulary and summarizing with your child at home.
The students will be summarizing a fiction story on tomorrow's reading quiz. Here is a great strategy we've been using in reading to ensure we include the most important parts of a summary! The students will also be applying their knowledge of plot vocabulary. Students can use the list below to help them study. Please note: theme and symbol will NOT be on the quiz!
