On Wednesday, September 5th at 8:10 AM in RM 311, Ms. Pace will meet with those parents who are interested in teaching a mini course. This is a mandatory meeting to discuss expectations, receive all appropriate documents and forms, and find out the “ins and outs” of teaching a mini course. So it is very important to read this email carefully as well as come to our meeting with an idea in mind of what to teach. This is only for those parents who are interested in teaching a mini course; it is not a meeting to discuss Live Oak itself.
We highly recommend teaming up with someone to co-teach a course. Please come prepared to share what you would like to teach so that we may get everyone’s information for organizational purposes. Here’s a quick overview: When will I be teaching the mini course?
What is expected of me?
What will I teach? This is completely up to you! Your lesson should be approximately 45 minutes long. This will be a great way for you to make a Pinterest Win! Here are some different ideas to help jump start your creativity!
It was so great seeing many of you at our Back to School Morning last Thursday.
If you were unable to attend, you can find the presentation here: http://bpe5thgrade.weebly.com/back-to-school.html.
Please see below information regarding a summer book club that will be meeting throughout the summer with Mrs. Green and Ms. Steinberg. Book Club will be held on Thursdays from 1-2 PM at the new Austin Public Library downtown. Students do not need to attend all sessions to participate. We look forward to reading with your children this summer!

*Note that there will be a mandatory meeting for all students who are submitting a talent show video on Thursday.* Please see below for a PDF of the Middle School Transition document that Kathleen Sullivan presented last Friday at the Parent's Coffee Meeting. Please see below for important information from our PE teachers and the May Madness volunteers!
Don't forget! The Talent Show Application Form is due on Tuesday, May 1st. As a reminder, both parents/guardians and students must sign the form. We are looking forward to seeing your talents in action! Google Docs
Mixbook:
Note: a desktop or laptop computer is suggested if students would like to use Mixbook at home. iPads do not always save changes made, and it is difficult to manipulate the content. I wanted to note an important change to our end-of-the-year field trip, as we are no longer going to Volente Beach. Instead, we are planning an all-day celebration at Main Event, where the students can enjoy:
What’s included? Lunch & $15 Fun Card! Every student will be provided with a $15 fun-card to spend at the arcade as well as lunch. Lunch will consist of 2 slices of pizza, a medium drink, and fresh baked cookies. If your child has food sensitivities, please contact our contact person at Main Event, Breanna Venecia, for alternatives. She can be reached at 512-401-0000 or by email at [email protected]. Rock Climbing Release of Liability: If your child is interested in rock climbing, you must complete Main Event's Release of Liability. I am including the link below. Please submit the form online and - for safe measure - email your signed copy to me by May 1st. Unfortunately, if the online waiver is not completed prior to May 1st, your child will not be able to participate in rock climbing. Rock climbing Release of Liability: https://www.smartwaiver.com/splash/18677/ We are looking forward to a great time together! We have many important events coming up, listed below, so don't forget to mark your calendars!

*In place of their 20 minutes of reading, students should work on their autobiography chapters and National Park brochures.* Thursday ~ National Park Brochure due Friday ~ Autobiography chapters 1, 2 & 3 drafted (typed up in Google Docs) ~ Present brochures at National Park Day! Monday ~ 10-12 photos in your email inbox for autobiography Across the past 2 weeks, class time has been dedicated to these two projects, and I have been wowed by the students' creativity and passion for teaching about their National Parks. We will continue to work on both assignments in class this coming week. If your child has any concerns about completing the tasks above on time, please have him/her come talk to me prior to the date they are due so that we can work together to make a plan! As many of you know, the students have been planning and drafting stories about their childhood for an autobiography project that we will be working on in class across the fourth quarter. A large component of this project will be gathering photos to accompany each student’s story, and we would very much appreciate your help!
Each student should plan to include 10-12 photos with their writing. When selecting photos, students should consider the content of each chapter they write (i.e. which memories are they including in each chapter):
If you could help your child locate and email these photos, it would be very helpful. The pictures are best emailed in digital format to their school email address. If digital copies are not available, please take a photo of the hard copy and email them to your child’s email address. Pictures are due Monday, April 9th; however, we encourage students to collect pictures in their email inboxes prior to that date. This is always a fun project that results in a beautiful published piece. We understand that all families are different with varying birth stories, traditions, and situations, and we encourage students to share only the information and memories that they are comfortable sharing. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me. In summary, your child needs help with the following:
Thank you for your help! Just a reminder about next week's schedule:
Enjoy your long weekend! Spring break is all about rest and relaxation! I am not assigning any new work over the break. The expectation is that all students have been using their time in class across the past 2 weeks to complete their research for their chosen National Park. This means that they have adequate notes under every category ("other interesting facts" is option) that will appear on their final product - a brochure - so no need to go overboard! Please see the assignment sheet below for additional information. Please note that the due date for all National Park research is Monday, March 19th, the day we return from spring break. That means that students who do not complete their notes in class by Friday, March 9th should complete their notes over break. If your child has any concerns about this, please encourage him/her to come talk to me before leaving for break so that we can set a plan. I am more than happy to make this manageable for students who are working hard and feeling behind! In addition, on the Wednesday after spring break, March 21st, the students' autobiography planning packets will be due. We have been working on these packets in class across this week, and we will be working on them when we return on Monday and Tuesday. You can find an example of the packet below. Your child will likely need your help completing the first section of this packet -- their birth story! This could be a fun activity to work on over break, but it is not required. My hope is that you will have some fun sharing your child's story with him/her. I am so looking forward to learning more about each kiddo! They all have so much to share :) I hope everyone has a restful break! This Friday will be our homeroom's last day of Safety Patrol until the end of the year. Starting Thursday, our class will be responsible for training Mr. Schieffer’s homeroom. I have been so impressed by your dedication, responsibility, and leadership, and I would like to thank you for your hard work.
Please make sure that you bring your Safety Patrol vest with you to school by this Thursday so that you can “pass the torch” to a student in Mr. Schieffer’s room. Thank you! We are looking forward to seeing you at our Open House tomorrow, February 23rd, which runs from 7:30-8:45am.
While you are here, make sure to stop by the library to sign up for a Westbank library card. See details below. Looking forward to seeing you! March 8th - 7:50-8:40amAll students will be flying kites during their PE class on March 7th (B Day), 8th (C Day) or 9th (A Day)!
Parents are invited to come and fly kites with their child, but are asked not to bring younger siblings! Please park in front of the school (in designated parking spaces) or at Riverbend (not by the field in order to reduce traffic). You can meet your child out on the field, we will bring them outside after some brief instructions. Please take your child’s kite home with you after we are done flying! Kites have been purchased by the Booster Club for every student! Kites will be distributed to your child’s class before their Kite Day. Students will use these kites only, please do not bring other kites from home! The teachers (along with their classroom buddies for the younger grades) will help put together the kites. They will be ready to go for kite day! We hope that the weather cooperates, but if kite flying is not possible during a class we will play games in the gym instead. Please do not call the office to see if kite day has been cancelled! Kite days will not be rescheduled. You can get ready for kite flying by attending the Zilker Kite Festival on Sunday, March 4th. For more information go to https://www.abckitefestival.org/ Students may only attend the kite day for their PE class. Please do not ask to participate with another group due to your child's absence on their assigned kite day. Look at the schedule below for your child’s Kite Day! Looking forward to some high flying FUN!!! Hope to see you during Kite Days! For more information please contact the PE department. Let’s go Fly a kite!
